What are gifts people have that aren't gifts of the Spirit?
What are the gifts of the Spirit?
1 Corinthians 12:7-11
Communicating wisdom (utterance/word means "word, spoken or written, often with a focus on the content of a communication"
Are there wise people who do not have the Spirits gift of wisdom (unsaved wise people for instance)?
I would say so in many ways (wise with money,
Solomon was given a supernatural gift of wisdom
He was not entirely unwise beforehand and even his request for wisdom was a wise request prior to getting wisdom from God
But his wisdom was greater and different than wisdom that came from me
1 Corinthians 1:17-2:16
The wisdom that the Spirit gives can look foolish to the world but it comes from God and makes the world's wisdom foolish
In fact, the first verse suggests that human wisdom is counterproductive
This is a gift that God likes giving to us (I think some gifts are rarer than others and harder to get. More on that later)
James 1:5
Communicating knowledge
1 Corinthians 1:4-7
This was a gift the Corinthians already had
1 Corinthians 8:1-3
There is a worldly knowledge that is not good and leads to pride
1 Corinthians 13:8-10
Even the gift of knowledge is only partial knowledge and will not last forever just as prophecy and tongues will not last forever
Or perhaps their limited nature will be replaced by a more complete knowledge (1 Corinthians 13:12)
Paul might have had this gift
2 Corinthians 11:6
Ether this was a gift from God which his flesh tried to turn into a source of pride or it was human knowledge which turned to pride
2 Corinthians 12:7
In charismatic circles this gift is usually thought to be a divine revelation about someone else's situation that they couldn't have possibly known about ("Reading a person's mail" is a phrase associated with this)
I think this gift is not so specific as that but it could include that
1 Kings 21:17-18
Mark 2:8
Acts 14:9
1 Corinthians 14:26
Perhaps this specific type of knowledge would be categorized as revelation by Paul
Or perhaps prophecy (1 Corinthians 14:24-25)
Often the gifts are hard to categorize just as wisdom and knowledge are easily confused
Proverbs 2:6
Someone once said that "Knowledge is knowing that a tomato is a fruit. Wisdom is knowing not to put it in a fruit salad. Philosophy is wondering if that means ketchup is a smoothie. And common sense is knowing that it isn't."
Faith
Romans 12:3,6
We all have some level of faith but having the gift of faith could not only encourage others but even enhance other gifts like prophecy
And perhaps often the gift of faith accompanies other gifts
Gifts of healing
Notice that there are plural gifts of healing
Perhaps some gifts of healing are for broken legs and others for cancer, rather than just one general gift of healing all people of anything that ales them
Some people seemed to have the gift to heal all sorts of diseases
Acts 5:15-6
Acts 28:8-9
Acts 8:7 may be an example of Philip only having a specific gift of healing
On the other hand it may just be a sampling of what he was gifted to heal
Working miracles
This one is broad
Many miracles and demonstrations of God's power could be included under this umbrella
It may even overlap with previous gifts
James 5:17-18
Acts 27:24–26
God does not always calm storms, sometimes He wants to perform a miracle and other times He has something else in mind
We cannot claim miracles into existence apart from God
Lamentations 3:37
Romans 4:17
Prophecy
What is prophecy?
What did the prophets say?
Future sayings?
Contemporary sayings?
Past sayings?
On some occasions prophets were involuntarily picked by God
1 Samuel 19:22-24
Matthew 7:22
Perhaps they did prophesy like Saul yet were far from God like Saul
Or perhaps they were falsely prophesying
1 Corinthians 14:24-25
What kind of content does this prophecy contain?
1 Corinthians 14:29-33
Prophets must use self control
Prophets encourage at times
Prophets teach at times
My definition of prophecy is a word from God given by a human
What forms do prophecies come in?
Visions
Dreams
Audible voices
Ecstatic trances
The Spirit bringing words to the heart and/or mouth of a prophet
Hosea 1:2
Sometimes prophets hear messages from God for themselves
1 Chronicles 25:3
Prophecy is sometimes connected to music
1 Samuel 10:5
2 Kings 3:14-16
1 Kings 17:13–14
Prophets often spoke to kings, but also to everyday people about their current situation
Acts 31:11
The words are given to others making clear it came from God not the prophet
Prophets often say uncomfortable truths
What about schools of prophets?
1 Samuel 19:18-24
Even if the word should be school I think it would be similar to the Levites getting training
Not that they had to learn what to say, because that was to come from God, but rather how to conduct themselves
Distinguish between spirits
Perhaps this could be used in the context of prophecy to detect between a person speaking from the Holy spirit vs a lying spirit
The same word is used in Hebrews 5:14
1 Thessalonians 5:19-22
It is important to test but not quench the Holy Spirit
Various kinds of tongues
Acts 2:6-11 (Acts 10:45-46)
Tongues here is foreign languages other humans speak
But that doesn't mean that all tongues are like that because other passages describe it differently
I don't think the miracle was in the hearing but rather the tongue
1 Corinthians 14:1-33
1 Corinthians 14:27-28
Sometimes there is an interpreter
This is already clearly different from Acts 2 where God picked the language because others were there who already understood it
1 Corinthians 14:14-19
It is mindless is a good sense in the same way that healing someone through the Holy Spirit doesn't take medical knowledge
It seems that Paul could sing in tongues as well as speak
We can speak in tongues as much as we'd like as long as it is in the proper context
Possible examples:
Ephesians 6:18
Jude 20
Interpretation of tongues
Already discussed
Ephesians 4:11
Galatians 5:18-23
Again I see these as both natural and supernatural
Love
Some of the other fruit are parts of love (patient, kind, joy (1 Corinthians 13)
Joy
Psalm 16:11
We experience joy in God's presence
Is there a time that you were spending with God that you were overcome with joy?
Psalm 4:6-7
The joy God gives is greater than the world's
Is there a difference between joy and happiness?
1 Peter 1:8-9
Joy is found in salvation
Psalm 42:4, 43:4, 71:23
Songs of praise and joy are closely related
Do you sing mostly solemn songs or joyful songs?
Peace
Matthew 5:9
Peace with others
Romans 5:1
Peace with God
Colossians 1:20
I think that although peace with others is always the goal, peace with God is more important
Romans 12:18
James 4:4
Ephesians 2:14-17
Our unity in Christ brings peace amongst believers
Philippians 4:7
Internal peace
Patience
God gives patience, but He also sets up circumstances to grow our patience (same with all the other fruit)
God is patient as well
1 Peter 3:18-20
2 Peter 3:9-10
1 Thessalonians 5:14
We must be patient to everyone
Ephesians 4:2
I like this definition of patience
We must be patient for God
James 5:7
Psalm 37:7
Psalm 40:1
Kindness
Romans 2:4
God's kindness leads to repentance
How?
Titus 3:4-7
We often think of it as love but love is kind
Romans 11:22
Can we have both kindness and severity?
Goodness
Exodus 33:19
What is God's goodness?
The Bible is full of references to God being good
Nahum 1:7
But that is actually one of the scariest things about Him in a way
John 10:10-11
Faithfulness
What comes to mind when you think of faithfulness?
Habakkuk 2:4
Proper motives
1 Corinthians 4:1-2
When you hire someone you want productivity and faithfulness
2 Timothy 2:11-13
2 Timothy 4:7-8
Revelation 2:10
Gentleness
1 Peter 3:3-4
Context is women but the fruit applies to both
James 3:13
Colossians 3:12-13
Ephesians 4:1-3
1 Timothy 6:10-11
Galatians 6:1
1 Peter 3:15-16
Self-control
2 Peter 1:5-10
Titus 1:7-9
1 Corinthians 9:25
Galatians 5:25
Other (fit somewhere)
1 Corinthians 12:1-7
We can be involved in things that we aren't gifted for by the Spirit
